Why bother with lunch when you can play hockey!

on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 20:12

Today I spent an hour chasing some young speed demons up and down the ice in a scrimmage. I didn't get to play the puck much, but had fun trying to get in the way as the hotshots were zipping toward the net. I'm always amazed at how some of these youngsters can move - they can change directions on a dime, and pass the puck to themselves around obstacles like me.

One little fellow in green (about 10 years old) was fearless - challenging the hottest of the hot shots every chance he got. He actually got the puck away from him once or twice.

Meditation and Keeping Busy

on Sun, 01/15/2012 - 22:05

Today's Kadampa Center teaching was about taming your mind. Geshe Gelek talked about one of my favorite thanka paintings - The Monk, The Elephant, and the Monkey. It shows the nine stages of taming your mind using great imagery. At first, the monk is chasing behind the black elephant and monkey - clearly having a hard time keeping up. As the three travel along the path, the animals slowly turn from black to white, and at the very end, the monk is riding the elephant....

It is all about practice - Geshe-la led us in three different types of meditation to help us start taming our minds.

A fresh look, and hopes for fresh content!

I had way too much fun last night moving content from my old Earthlink Wordpress site to a DrupalGardens site. Amazingly, I started at around 8:00 - and before midnight, I had started the process of repointing the domain. This morning, it was switched!

Nothing fancy as far a the theme so far - moved some blocks around, changed colors and backgrounds, and, of course, added Miss Scout to the header. I have grand plans for that little girl! More to come as I get Chris in there to add/update some content. Look for more images in the header.

It has been too long....

It is time to start blogging again!

Hockey season is upon us, and we’re looking forward to a great year for the Carolina Hurricanes. And my own hockey career is continuing - I recently started playing in the house league associated with the NC Trailblazers - a bunch of really great women here in the Triangle. The team I’m on (white) won its first two games. Yes, I did play, and hopefully contributed at least a tiny little bit to the team’s success.

I took some skating classes to help me learn crossovers and transitions. That was an adventure of its own!

Almost Summer Cooking Fun

on Mon, 05/31/2010 - 17:10

It has been a great week for cooking and eating mostly healthy - and local! We signed up for The Produce Box and received our first box this last week. Awesome blueberries, squash, bib lettuce, spinach, potatoes, tomato, snow peas, spring onions, and cabbage. Made some really great stuff already!

The blueberries were so good, they were rinsed and put out as snack food. They did not last long! Chris saw some more that looked good at the grocery store, but they were mushy and nowhere near as good. They were made into a really nice crumb cake which brought out some sweetness (the sugary/buttery
